We will kick off our 12 Days of Frugal Gifts with Sewn Gifts. If you have a sewing machine or know someone who does, then you can make these simple gifts for giving.

First, you'll need to decide what you'll be making and these free downloadable patterns from Hancock Fabrics will give you some great inspiration.

As for finding the fabric at a good price, you should first check the sales papers for your local craft stores and find out what type of fabric is on sale. The patterns you are considering will list exactly the amount of fabric you need for the project, so when you find an affordable fabric, you can save money simply by having them cut exactly the amount you will need for the project and no more.

Another idea to save money on fabric is to go to the remnant section and see what type of remnant fabric is available that will suit your project.

Sometimes, you can save money by substituting one fabric for another, depending on the project. Chances are that the people who work in the fabric department are experienced with sewing. Let them know what you are working on, and let them give you some advice on possible fabrics to use. You may be able to save by making a switch.

If you are a novice seamstress, then you can get some wonderful guidance through Craftsy. Craftsy offers online craft classes on just about every crafting discipline you can imagine. Craftsy offers FREE mini-classes too, like Bag-Making Basics: Reversible Tote & Zipper Pouch and Bag-Making Basics: Drawstring Bag & Bucket Bag which would be perfect projects for gifting!

Tomorrow, come back for Day 2! Crochet Gifts
