Frugal Mindset: Less is More

Frugal Mindset:  Less is More

Sometimes surrounding ourselves by many material things makes us feel wealthier even when our pocketbooks are nearly empty.  It is a kind of compensation that makes us feel better about our situation, but it does more harm than good. The clutter created from things you don’t really need keeps you from making good use of what you have, and takes the focus away from a frugal lifestyle.

The truth is, when you are developing your frugal mindset, the best policy to follow is “less is more”.

How many times have you gone through your closet and found brand new clothes you’ve never worn and won’t wear now because the style no longer appeals to you? It’s great to hit the clothing clearance sales and buy for next season, but you need to have some idea of the items you need to complete your wardrobe. No matter what the price, if you overbuy, you are wasting money that could be invested in another way.

There are some easy guidelines to follow when it comes to organizing any area of your home with frugality in mind.

Purge
Organize
Take Inventory
Create a List

  • First, you’ll want to purge items you do not use or need.  Make sure these items ultimately leave the premises so they don’t re-assimilate into your household. Bring items such as clothing to a resale shop, put items aside for a garage sale or donate them to a local charity. Make sure to get a receipt for your taxes for large donations.
  • Once you’ve purged, organize what is left by grouping like items together and be certain everything has a place. As you are organizing, you may find even more items to purge as you refine your space.
  • Now that you have an organized space it will be quite simple to take inventory of what you have.
  • The last step is to keep a master list of items needed.  That way you have a handle on what you have in your home so that you’re not purchasing items simply because you don’t know what you already have.  When you make a list, keep a list of things you need soon and things you would like to purchase should you find a good deal in the future. This method adapts well to most any area of your home: the pantry, the closets, the toy area, the book collection, or your stockpile of household products.

These guidelines were especially helpful to me when I decided to tackle my pantry. I was buying a lot of bulk dry goods and the packaging made it hard for me to keep up with the amount I had on hand.  I created a Mason jar system to organize my bulk dry goods and it is really efficient. I keep like items together, I can see what I have on hand at a glance and it’s super easy to make a menu plan. As I start running low on an item, I add it to my shopping list. Now this area of my pantry is extremely easy to maintain.

I hope this will help you to be more organized in your frugal life. Being organized is an integral part of living a frugal lifestyle because we must find ways to efficiently use what we have so that we can put our money to better use in other areas. Remember, even if you only have time to do one area of your home right now, you will reap the benefits and that will motivate you to take on more frugal organization projects in the future.

I took a Craftsy serger class recently and I really enjoyed it. I was excited to find a great deal on my serger a couple of years ago because I imagined that I would make all of these wonderful gifts, but I really had no idea how to use it. The Craftsy class took me through it all step by step and it took the anxiety out of learning how to use my serger.

Now, this year I will be able to use my serger for all sorts of projects with confidence, and I love the fact that if I need a refresher I can go back and review the class videos and notes anytime I need to.

Easy Christmas Snow Wreath Project

In the past year, I've started this new tradition of making wreaths for every season. I have a couple of wreath forms that I recycle and I just switch out the items on the wreath as the seasons change. I always try to find stuff around the house to use instead of going out and buying items specifically to make the wreath.

I decided I wanted a "snow" wreath this year since we never see snow in this region and I really love how it turned out.

Here's how I made it...

I spread fiber fill over a grapevine wreath and it held pretty well onto the twigs, so I decided not to glue it down. Then I used some glittered ribbon and wound it around the fiber fill covered wreath. I used some floral wire to secure the ribbon in the back, and then I threaded some colorful jingle bell ornaments in the spaces between the glittered ribbon using floral wire, but I think ornament hooks would work just as well. I made a very simple bow out of some of the blue ribbon that I used to wrap around my Christmas tree last year and secured the ribbon with a flower pick from an arrangement I had on my shelf.

The dove is also a Christmas ornament that I thought would look perfect shimmering in the middle.

The wreath took about 30 minutes to put together and I used fiber fill, ribbon and ornaments that I already had on hand.

This wreath idea would work with other ornaments as well, so take a look around and see what you can come with to make your own snow wreath.

It's hard to believe this idea all started when I was inspired to use up some left over fiber fill as snow, and it ended up as a beautiful wreath.

So simple, but it's one of my favorite Christmas projects I've ever done.

Ways to Save on Shipping Costs with USPS

Here are some tips for saving on your shipping needs when you choose to ship with the United States Postal Service.

USPS offers a
Pay, Print & Ship online service that saves you money in a few ways.

Did you know that you can save money by preparing packages and printing postage labels at home?

And...you can save on time and gas expenses because you don't even have to make a trip the post office to get your supplies or to get your items mailed.

My favorite way to ship is flat rate Priority Mail, because if it fits, it ships at a set rate (up to 70lbs) . You can fit quite a lot into one box if you arrange your items carefully and strategically.

Here's how to save:

  • Go to USPS.com and create or log in to your account. You will be able to enter all the shipping information, choose your service, and pay for postage online. When you pay for your postage and print your label in this way, you get instant savings off of the set rate for your service. You will also receive a free delivery confirmation when you ship online. I saved 50 cents by using Pay, Print & Ship and printing my shipping label for my Medium Flat Rate Priority Mail box at home.

  • Schedule a free pickup if you are using Priority Mail or Express Mail and your carrier will pick up your package during regular mail delivery.

If you do not want to send your item(s) by Priority Mail, then you can use these tools to calculate a price or use this guide for deciding which service is right for you.

Craftsy Class Review: Beginner Serging

Online Sewing Class

So, it's confession time. I've had a serger machine for a couple of years and never learned how to use it. I love making things and when I found a great deal on my serger, I thought I'd be making all kinds of neat things right out of the box. The truth is, I got overwhelmed and didn't know where to start so I put it back in the sewing cabinet and there it waited. I never had the courage and never set aside the extra time to devote to deciphering the manual and the printed material because I am one who learns from seeing it happen.

When Craftsy offered me the opportunity to take a free Craftsy class, and write a blog post about it I was really excited. I went on to the Craftsy website to see what classes might interest me, and there it was: Beginner Serging: Machine Basics & Techniques with Amy Alan.

Beginner Serging: Machine Basics & Techniques

I was really anxious to get going, and I found that almost immediately, I became more relaxed about the whole process because the class instruction videos are well organized and it was like being in a classroom. I was able to learn about my machine step-by-step. My very favorite thing about the videos is that you can do a quick 30 second repeat, make video notes as you go along, and watch the instructional videos as much as you want because access to your course never expires.

The video lesson walk-through on the parts and function of my serger was so helpful. Amy shows in detail the parts and function of three brands of sergers: the Bernina, Janome, and the Brother. If you have a different kind, you can post a question relative to your machine and she will respond to you and help you along. During this course, you will create a serger stitch book where you will keep a record of all the stitches you learn and the specific settings you used for that stitch on your machine. There are a total of nine lessons and three projects to complete.

I do still need a lot of practice, but I love the fact that I can come back to my course at any time and review the information as I work with my machine and take on new projects.

Most Craftsy classes range from $9.99-$39.99, and your access to the class never expires. If you want to get your feet wet and try out a Craftsy class, there are some mini-classes available free of charge. I am already signed up for the free mini-class Bag Making Basics: Reversible Tote and Zipper Pouch.

From a frugal standpoint, it is important to me that when I invest in Craftsy classes I am able to learn new skills that will save me money over time. Many of the projects I make with using my newly gleaned serger skills will be given as gifts.

By the way, Project Upcycle: Thrifty Sewing Projects is the next class on my list. I love the idea of using sewing techniques and yard sale finds to create something new.
