Frugal Mindset: Less is More
Frugal Mindset: Less
is More
Sometimes surrounding ourselves by many material things
makes us feel wealthier even when our pocketbooks are nearly empty. It is a kind of compensation that makes us
feel better about our situation, but it does more harm than good. The clutter created from things you don’t really need keeps
you from making good use of what you have, and takes the focus away from a frugal lifestyle.
The truth is, when you are developing your frugal mindset,
the best policy to follow is “less is more”.
How many times have you gone through your closet and found
brand new clothes you’ve never worn and won’t wear now because the style no
longer appeals to you? It’s great to hit the clothing clearance sales and buy
for next season, but you need to have some idea of the items you need to
complete your wardrobe. No matter what the price, if you overbuy, you are
wasting money that could be invested in another way.
There are some easy guidelines to follow when it comes to organizing
any area of your home with frugality in mind.
Purge
Organize
Take Inventory
Create a List
Organize
Take Inventory
Create a List
- First, you’ll want to purge items you do not use or need. Make sure these items ultimately leave the premises so they don’t re-assimilate into your household. Bring items such as clothing to a resale shop, put items aside for a garage sale or donate them to a local charity. Make sure to get a receipt for your taxes for large donations.
- Once you’ve purged, organize what is left by grouping like items together and be certain everything has a place. As you are organizing, you may find even more items to purge as you refine your space.
- Now that you have an organized space it will be quite simple to take inventory of what you have.
- The last step is to keep a master list of items needed. That way you have a handle on what you have in your home so that you’re not purchasing items simply because you don’t know what you already have. When you make a list, keep a list of things you need soon and things you would like to purchase should you find a good deal in the future. This method adapts well to most any area of your home: the pantry, the closets, the toy area, the book collection, or your stockpile of household products.
These guidelines were especially helpful to me when I
decided to tackle my pantry. I was buying a lot of bulk dry goods and the
packaging made it hard for me to keep up with the amount I had on hand. I created a Mason jar system to organize my
bulk dry goods and it is really efficient. I keep like items together, I can
see what I have on hand at a glance and it’s super easy to make a menu
plan. As I start running low on an item, I add it to my shopping
list. Now this area of my pantry is extremely easy to maintain.
I hope this will help you to be more organized in your
frugal life. Being organized is an integral part of living a frugal lifestyle
because we must find ways to efficiently use what we have so that we can put
our money to better use in other areas. Remember, even if you only have time to
do one area of your home right now, you will reap the benefits and that will motivate
you to take on more frugal organization projects in the future.

Craftsy Class Sale! All classes are between $9.99 and $24.99
There's a Christmas Sale over at Craftsy!
All classes are priced between $9.99 and $24.99! You can purchase your class now while it's on sale and access it when your ready to start because your access never expires.
A Craftsy class also makes a great last minute gift for the crafter who wants to expand their skills. There is easy option for gifting, just click the "Buy as a gift" button in the class purchase box.
I took a Craftsy serger class recently and I really enjoyed it. I was excited to find a great deal on my serger a couple of years ago because I imagined that I would make all of these wonderful gifts, but I really had no idea how to use it. The Craftsy class took me through it all step by step and it took the anxiety out of learning how to use my serger.
Now, this year I will be able to use my serger for all sorts of projects with confidence, and I love the fact that if I need a refresher I can go back and review the class videos and notes anytime I need to.

Easy Christmas Snow Wreath Project
In the past year, I've started this new tradition of making wreaths for every season. I have a couple of wreath forms that I recycle and I just switch out the items on the wreath as the seasons change. I always try to find stuff around the house to use instead of going out and buying items specifically to make the wreath.
I decided I wanted a "snow" wreath this year since we never see snow in this region and I really love how it turned out.
Here's how I made it...
I spread fiber fill over a grapevine wreath and it held pretty well onto the twigs, so I decided not to glue it down. Then I used some glittered ribbon and wound it around the fiber fill covered wreath. I used some floral wire to secure the ribbon in the back, and then I threaded some colorful jingle bell ornaments in the spaces between the glittered ribbon using floral wire, but I think ornament hooks would work just as well. I made a very simple bow out of some of the blue ribbon that I used to wrap around my Christmas tree last year and secured the ribbon with a flower pick from an arrangement I had on my shelf.
The dove is also a Christmas ornament that I thought would look perfect shimmering in the middle.
The wreath took about 30 minutes to put together and I used fiber fill, ribbon and ornaments that I already had on hand.
This wreath idea would work with other ornaments as well, so take a look around and see what you can come with to make your own snow wreath.
It's hard to believe this idea all started when I was inspired to use up some left over fiber fill as snow, and it ended up as a beautiful wreath.
So simple, but it's one of my favorite Christmas projects I've ever done.

Ways to Save on Shipping Costs with USPS
Here are some tips for saving on your shipping needs when you choose to ship with the United States Postal Service.
USPS offers a Pay, Print & Ship online service that saves you money in a few ways.
Did you know that you can save money by preparing packages and printing postage labels at home?
And...you can save on time and gas expenses because you don't even have to make a trip the post office to get your supplies or to get your items mailed.
My favorite way to ship is flat rate Priority Mail, because if it fits, it ships at a set rate (up to 70lbs) . You can fit quite a lot into one box if you arrange your items carefully and strategically.
Here's how to save:
If you do not want to send your item(s) by Priority Mail, then you can use these tools to calculate a price or use this guide for deciding which service is right for you.
