Coupon Organization Series: Part Three
The Envelope System
The envelope system is like a souped-up accordion file system but less portable. This system is for couponers who maintain too many clipped coupons for an accordion file, but are not yet ready to step into “binder” territory.
Basically, you’ll need a shoe-box sized plastic container and a set of envelopes. You will label your envelopes with your own customized categories and then place your coupons in each envelope accordingly. It’s nice because you can close the flap of the envelope to contain any potential coupon escapees-or you can cut the flap off if you find that it is cumbersome to open each envelope. Either way, the envelope system works as a mini filing cabinet with the envelopes serving as the file folders.
The envelope system lends itself to more customization than the accordion filing system and you can expand your system to include envelopes for a specific store. Additionally, when you are preparing for a shopping trip, you can pull all of the applicable coupons and place them into one envelope and bring that single envelope into the store. You can also create envelopes for each of the drug stores so that you can keep coupons together for that week’s deals.
The envelopes do wear out over time, but they are easily and inexpensively replaced. It is convenient to keep the coupon box in the car, as it does not take up too much space. It is advantageous if you find an unexpected deal you can’t pass up-because it won’t take long to go grab your coupons from the car.
Some people stick with the envelope system indefinitely. It really just depends on a person’s couponing style. Again, there is no right or wrong method of coupon organization-it is truly a personal preference.
