Frugality and Peace of Mind: Organization

I wrote about some key concepts that lead to frugality with peace of mind, one of them being organization. The reward for organization in general, is that you have more time to spend doing leisure activities and hobbies. This leads to a more fulfilled life.

Organization in terms of frugality is really paramount. First of all, you don't want any one thing to consume your life. You don't want to spend hours and hours organizing your coupons, or shopping in the store, because you inevitably miss out on other things. Ultimately, if you do allow any one activity to become all consuming-no matter how much you enjoy it, the threat of burn-out is imminent.

The chief deterrent for many people who consider adopting a frugal lifestyle is the belief that it takes too much time to maintain. This does not have to be the case. With a bit of organization, you can enjoy a frugal lifestyle without having the burden of excessive maintenance.

Find the time suckers. Determine what takes up the most time in your practice of frugality and vow to organize that area of your life first. It may be your coupon binder, it may be organizing your pantry, or it may be to create a folder or file for entertainment coupons. Prioritize your organization efforts and focus on the task that will be most beneficial to you.
Don't let history repeat itself. At least not the history best left in the past. What is it that you find yourself doing time and time again that you know is a waste of money? Are you going to the store without a list? Are you over-buying or re-buying items simply because you can't remember if you already have it? Are you stopping for convenience food because you have nothing thawed out to cook at home? Focus on the problem area and make a plan to create a new outcome.
Purge. It's as simple as that. You may just be overwhelmed with stuff and you don't know where to start. Start small. Choose one area, such as your medicine cabinet-and start there. Check expiration dates and purge what you don't need. Organize the area and then make a list of what you need to stock. Then, you can organize your coupons for medicines and first aid so that you can focus on those deals in the coming weeks. Remember...baby steps.
Find the methods to your madness. Everyone's method will be different because we aren't the spawn of cookie cutters. Find what works for you, make your own lists and organize things your way. The key is to make sure that the way you've organized is easy for you to maintain and ultimately works for you.

Frugality and Peace of Mind

So here we are, about to embark on a new year. As the old year ends and a new one begins, we tend to reflect upon what we've accomplished and what we failed to accomplish. But what we really need to do is feel confident about the progress we've made toward our goals, even if it's slight.

It's a time for planning and setting new goals. I've had a little reflection time, too. I began to think about how this year has been the busiest year yet for me and I wondered how I kept up with all I had to do. I did not accomplish everything that I wanted to, but I did accomplish a lot. There were a few short falls and challenges-but such is life. As it turns out, I had a great year and made great strides-in my personal life as well as in my professional life. It made me think about what I needed to keep in mind this year to continue to meet my goals and made me examine the reasons why I enjoy a frugal lifestyle so much. The ultimate reason that came to light was that living a frugal lifestyle gives me peace of mind. To me, that is more valuable than anything.

It then occurred to me that there are a few key concepts that lead to peace of mind, and when practiced-peace of mind will naturally come to you.

Each of the key concepts flows into the next and they all work so cohesively together. Frugality and peace of mind go hand-in-hand, but it is recommended that if you are just getting started in your life of frugality-baby steps are best. If you take it slow, and discover what methods work best for your lifestyle, then you will stick with it. Don't let frugality be a fad in your life, let it be with you to stay.

Plan your Christmas Dinner Menu Now

Plan Christmas Dinner now! Why? Oh, there are so many reasons why...

You are hosting Christmas dinner, and chances are that you are going to do your shopping a couple of days before and get everything you need in one fell swoop. That approach certainly gets the job done, but it could very well blow your budget.

By taking the time to plan your Christmas dinner menu now, you will save yourself money, time and stress. You will be prepared and you may even be able to enlist some help. Then you'll have a chance to actually enjoy the dinner. What a novel idea.

Make your menu. You probably already have a pretty good idea about what you'd like to serve. Make a list of dishes, then make an ingredient list based upon your menu.
Take inventory. Take note of what you already have on hand in your freezer, refrigerator and pantry. Mark those items off your ingredient list.

Create a shopping list. This is different than your ingredient list, because it only contains those items that you actually need. This is key to staying within your budget.

Gather coupons. Pull those coupons that will give you a discount on your needed items and place them in an envelope labeled “Christmas Dinner” along with your shopping list. Keep it handy.

Now, for the next couple of weeks, keep a close eye on the grocery sales ads and drug store ads and start buying the items that are on your list when they are at their lowest price. Be sure to check your coupon envelope!

Tip: Another way to stay within your budget is to request that your guests contribute a dish to the menu. You already know who has a specialty, right? Aunt Penelope can make a green bean casserole with her eyes closed, and Mom makes a delicious fig cake. Pick up the phone and make your requests now before it's too late.

You need to account for the fringe, too. Are you going to break out the fine china-or the plastic cups and the punch bowl? Either way, you'll probably need napkins. Those weren't on your list, were they?

Lastly, I know this sounds crazy, but it's beneficial to actually have Christmas dinner in your mind. You'll have a mental picture of what you really need, and you'll probably have a few laughs along with a few epiphanies.

See? Now that you think about it, you vow that you absolutely will not serve grape juice to the children this year. Though traditional, it is a detriment to furniture and clothing and therefore to the production of viable Christmas pictures. Remember last year? Even though you tried with all your might to convince your very formally dressed grandmother over two glasses of eggnog that sweet little Susie's dress was in fact the latest in red and purple tie-dyed Christmas fashion, she was not to be fooled. The look on her face in the pictures proves it.

Yes. You can scratch grape juice off your list now.

Frugal Gift Wrapping Ideas

The truth is, I know you must be very proud of yourself because you've done so well on your Christmas shopping. You got some great deals and you even came in under budget. That's great! Now you've got to wrap all those presents.

Unfortunately, I also know something else. You opened your closet where you usually keep the gift wrap and you found...tumbleweeds. Believe it or not, it happens to us all. Fear not, there is hope.

Next year, you'll be able to avoid this situation with a little preparation and creativity. Until then-these ideas may inspire you.

Frugal Gift Wrap Ideas:

Comics: Tried and true and predictable, but effective. You get the newspaper delivered to your home at a discount every week if you are any kind of frugal-ite, so save those comics and put them to good use.

Tissue paper and tulle: Inexpensive and it lends itself to coverage of odd shaped gifts. Just wrap the gift in tissue paper, surround with tulle and tie it off with a ribbon. Cute!

Small paper bags: If you have small gifts, you can put them into small paper bags. You can find the patterned and printed ones on sale for less than 15 cents each, or you can buy a package of lunch sacks and embellish them with stickers. Here's an idea: Use a hole punch and weave ribbon through the top for a nice touch.

Recycled boxes: Yes, I already know you knew about this one. But it is kind of fun to see the recipient's face when they are led to believe that their present is what is pictured on the box.

I am aware this could go either way-but 'tis one of the joys of Christmas! One of my personal favorites is a teenage girl thinking she's getting a toaster when it's really her favorite cosmetics. The face-morph is truly something special to witness.

Tins: You will receive food gifts in tins. It's a guarantee. Clean them out and recycle them by using them as gift receptacles for others.

Fabric Remnants: You can get some really cute fabrics in the remnant section of your craft store for under $1 per yard. Use some pinking sheers to trim a piece of fabric down to the size you need and wrap away. Finish it off with ribbon (which you can also find in the remnant section-true story).

Dish towels: You got it. I fear nothing. This is an especially great wrapping option when you are gifting kitchen themed items or food gifts. Everyone can use dish towels. Not only does it serve as the wrapping, but it's also part of the present. No worries, because if the recipient personally finds the towel unattractive for use in the kitchen-it can be used as a cleaning rag. Everybody wins.

Large paper bags from the grocery store. You might have to ask for them, and they still exist. They are not but in fairy tales. All you need to do to turn them into wrapping paper is to cut them and turn them inside out if they are printed and then you can embellish with paint, crayons, stickers or you can even stamp them. Here's where is gets fun: If you don't have children of your own, borrow some-and let them paint, stamp, glitter, hand print, fingerprint and splatter paint away. Who said you had to do your own dirty work? The kids will have so much fun, they will never equate it to child labor. Besides, if you borrowed the children, you gave their parents a much needed reprieve. This is an especially notable fact should you return them in a state of less than pristine cleanliness.

Now that you've had your fun, let's be practical:

Keep these tips in mind:

Buy clearance gift wrap after Christmas. Set aside $10 solely to purchase clearanced gift wrap. Wait until it goes to 75% off or better and get a few rolls. You can also pick up ribbon and bows at a great discount too.

Use Artificial flowers. Flowers make a nice embellishment, and will dress up even the most modest wrapping job. So add a few to your collection when you find them on sale at different times of year.

Holiday Clearance. It doesn't have to be Christmas themed. You can find red boxes and bags after Valentine's day and purple, green and gold items after Mardi Gras and green items after St. Patrick's Day. If you find a couple of items (boxes, bags, tissue paper, ribbon) at other times of year that would be suitable for gift wrapping-then add it to your stash.

Recycle gift bags, bows and ribbon. Statistics show that you will receive at least one gift with a borderline ridiculous amount of bunched ribbon attached to it. This will adorn many, many presents in the future. Guard it with your life. This highly esteemed type of ribbon possesses the superpower of multiplicity when activated with scissors, just so you know.

Many gifts you receive will come in gift bags, most of which will be in perfect condition after your gift has been removed. Save them for later use. Hopefully the gift-giver has not gotten excited with a permanent marker and written your name boldly upon the bag...if so, a large sticker over the hieroglyphics would serve as the perfect remedy. There have been less effective cover-ups in our history.

No, the special built-in “sticky stuff” on gift bows won't work twice. But I heard tape has sticky stuff, too. So don't be afraid to give those bows a second chance, they just need a little help-I assure you it will all work out.

The possibilities are endless now! Well, maybe not endless-but at least at this point, you have a few new options, right?

Fundraising Raffle to Benefit Residents of Village du Lac

"Some of you know that I volunteer with the deaf and deaf/blind but you probably do not know where I do my volunteering at. I volunteer at the Village du Lac here in Lafayette, LA which is housing for the elderly and disabled adults, in particular the deaf and deaf/blind. You probably also do not know that Acadiana has the highest number of deaf/blind residents in the United States.

I am trying to raise money to help these residents as they do not receive many, if at all, donations or assistance from the government. Due to lack of funds, they have had to discontinue many programs, activities, etc.

Trimming the Tree the Frugal Way

The purchase of a tree and all the trimmings can contribute to the challenge of staying on your budget each holiday season. Some people prefer an artificial tree and some people prefer a live tree but no matter which you prefer-it must bear decorations. The frugal approach would be to purchase an artificial tree that you decorate year after year with decorations that you recycle from the past season. However, I've taken into consideration that everyone is not equipped with a full tree trimming set-up, so I have come up with some frugal tree trimming ideas for you.

Let's start with a pop quiz.

Please read the following questions, and answer truthfully and carefully:

1) Have your decorations succumbed to the attic troll? (Cousin to the garden gnome-this troll resides in your attic and loves to hide and misplace things until they are out of season.) Example-you know you have a tree stand, and after an intensive and exhausting search in late November-you concede that it's missing. Then, that Easter-you find it just where you thought you tucked it away in the first place.

2) Have some of your ornaments met the perilous “clumsy hands”? (These hands may belong to an adult, teenager, child or infant. Please be aware that “clumsy hands” is a non-discriminatory affliction.)

3) Are many of your ornaments currently boycotting your tree due to repeated ridicule in the past by other family members on the basis of their color, size, shape or theme? (You know-ornaments have rights, too.)

4) Have your pets used your tree as a recreational monument thereby sending a slew of ornaments plummeting to the ground at regular intervals? (Obedience training seemed unnecessary at the time, I'm sure.)

5) Are you just starting out in your own place and you truly believe that Charlie Brown's tree looks like a majestic redwood in comparison to your immediate holiday decor selection? (Let's face it. We all have to start somewhere.)

6) Is your house a hot spot for the “disappearing box phenomenon”? (Very similar to the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon, yet it only affects non-seafaring boxes.)

If you've answered “yes”, “maybe” or “no” to any of the questions above, then keep reading....

Ideas for frugal tree decorations:

Make your own garland! (Cranberries, Popcorn or Buttons)

Use embroidery thread, dental floss or fishing line to string your garland and let the kids help! Tips: Let the popcorn sit out and become a bit stale so it's easier to string, and you can also color it with food coloring if you like. Cranberry garland is beautiful-and don't forget to hang a bit outside on the tree for the birds to enjoy too!

Raid the sewing box and grab some colorful buttons, you can space them out and tie a knot after each button to keep them in place.

Bows and Pom Poms- You can make big bows or simple garland with wide ribbon and you can use scrap yarn to make pom poms of any size. Just slip a hook through the pom pom or fashion a loop with yarn and it's ready to hang on your tree.

Candy Canes- They come with a built-in hanger, and you can find them in a variety of colors. Just try not to eat them all before Christmas.

Foil Ornaments- Children love this project. Take a piece of thick foil and fold it into a star, square or any shape you like. Etch or decorate with permanent marker and you have a masterpiece!

Origami- If you're adventurous and have nimble fingers, why not have a go at creating some origami ornaments?

Photos- There are always a plethora of photo deals available this time of year and quick turn-around on photo developing these days. Get creative and make some homemade photo ornaments.

Christmas Cards- Christmas cards have beautiful scenery and I'm sure you have some that would make really nice embellishments for your tree.

Artificial Poinsettia Flowers- Very affordable and easy to attach to the tree with a little floral wire or ornament hook.

Glitter Construction Paper or Foam Snowflakes- A throwback to first grade. Come on, you know you want to do it. Just make sure you wipe the glitter from your face and peel the glue off of fingers before you go out on the town.

Glitter Pine Cones- Just take a trip outside, gather a few small pine cones and take them on a trip to Sparkle City. The squirrels won't even miss them, because-as we all know-squirrels have never been influenced by glitz and glam.

So...now you have no excuses left. Go turn up the holiday music and decorate that tree!

Black Friday Checklist and Survival Guide: It's a Jungle Out There!

Black Friday. It comes every year, and every year we vow not to partake in the organized chaos, but yet we do. It is all about enjoyment and accomplishing the task you set out to do, right? It's so fun to go out with friends and family and shop delightfully and enjoy the sights, sounds and wares of the season. It's truly a wonderful adventure, isn't it?

The sights and sounds of Black Friday shopping are all too familiar. The banshee-esque sounds of people screeching when they find what they are looking for, the animalistic nature of territorial stances, the quickening of footsteps behind you as you close in on your prize, the overcrowding of the herds, the unidentifiable sounds that fill the night air and last into the wee hours of the morning.

Who are we kidding here? It's jungle out there and if you are going to swing on the vines and brave the wild, you'll have to be prepared.

There are a few fundamentals you should know, so here goes:

CHECKLIST

Preparation:

Full tank of gas
Clean car/clean trunk
Fully charged cell phone
Blanket
Bag o' snacks in the car
Thermos with coffee/water
Store ads and coupons
Planned route
List of times that stores open
List of items needed at each store
Place at home to put items

Of note:

Ideas for places to eat
Places along your route that will be open all night with restroom facilities available
Budget for each store or total budget for entire shopping trip

Attire:

Dress in layers: t-shirt and sweater or long sleeved shirt
Jeans or comfortable pants with pockets
Comfortable shoes

Remember: Minimal bulk leaves hands free and maximizes basket space:

Small handbag or a wallet that fits into pocket with one card, cash, license, coupons and shopping list.

Don't forget to rest before heading out tonight, and drive safely.

Black Friday Survival Guide

Hibernate.
You'll need to rest up for this taxing journey. You must be alert and agile to get those deals!

The lair.

You need to prepare your vehicle, which is like your lair. Full tank of gas, snacks, charged cell phone and cell phone charger and a cleaned, vacuumed and de-cluttered interior. You'll want a blanket for warmth, should you need to wait in the car in the parking lot and it's also a nice item to cloak your purchases-should you want to. Put your ads, coupons, itinerary and map in your car the day before your excursion. It's a good idea to put a first aid kit in the glove box too. You laugh, but just trust me on this one.

Scavenging for food.
Squirrels are no dummies. They plan ahead. Pack some non-perishable snacks in your car, and maybe some in your pocket for the long wait ahead. Fill a thermos with hot chocolate or coffee or water. You need to stay hydrated, because if you weren't aware of it already-this shopping trip counts as your workout for the entire week.

Attire.
Layering is key. Chances are it will be cold, but inside the store it is going to warm up quick with all those other people, so it's nice to be able to molt if you need to. You'll want to carry around your currency in a small receptacle. The best choice is something that will fit in your front pocket. Your license, card and cash and coupons should fit in it nicely. You may want to load a prepaid credit card with the total amount of your budget and carry that with you instead, it will keep your budget in check and is less cumbersome than multiple forms of payment.

The nest.
Well, eventually-you will head back to the mainland and your home will need to have a spot for all of the items you are bringing back from the jungle. I usually prepare a closet, so that when I get back, all I have to do is place the bags in there and get ready for a nap after my long journey.

Preparation.
You need to have a plan about what you are seeking. Make a list of the items you want at each store and set a budget. Even if you know the store layout very well, there is no way to know where each item will be placed, but at least you'll know your way around.

The map.
You'll need a map of the jungle. So what you need to do is to plan out your route according to time of store opening and priority. If you have other adventurers in your party, then there is a chance to divide and conquer.

Stay the course.
Try not to detour from your carefully planned route-make sure you know where to find restroom facilities, and find a restaurant that's open all night.

The jungle.

The hunt.
If you know what you came for, and stick to your list, you will be focused. Go for the item of highest priority first, because you may not get everything you want. There will always be someone faster and there is only a limited supply of any one deal-even if the stores prepare well ahead of time. So enjoy the hunt! When you are focused there is more opportunity for success and less of a chance for disappointment.

The treasure.
Yes. You came to get the ultimate prize-but there is no need to let the wild animal come out in you in order to secure it-be polite and courteous, even if others aren't.

The escape.
You've done your work. Now get in your car with all your great finds and head for home. You're walking away from a glorious adventure safe and sound. There's something to be said for that.

Our Work in the Community: The Budget Queen Outreach

Some of you who have been in our Budget Queen Community for awhile, and those of you who attend our coupon swaps already know about The Budget Queen work in the community, but I haven't really made it public yet.

I've done regular volunteer work with The Bishop O'Donnell Transitional Housing Program over the last year and a half and will continue to do so. I want to expand my efforts and have the ability to offer these services not only to the residents of the program but to other residents of the community who cannot afford the fee-based services we offer. Hence, the reason why I have been led to begin the process of creating a non-profit which will be known as:

The Budget Queen Outreach

I have created a blog: The Budget Queen Outreach, to keep everyone updated on the work we do each month in the community and the progress of the pursuit of non-profit status for The Budget Queen Outreach. I will also offer updates on this blog as well.

Here is my first post for The Budget Queen Outreach Blog:

"I am owner and administrator of The Budget Queen, LLC. The primary focus of my business is to provide frugal education and money saving tools and advice to the public. While many of my services are free-via The Budget Queen Blog and http://www.thebudgetqueen.com/, some services are fee-based, such as private budget consultations and group classes. The need for this type of education in the community is vast and through my volunteer work with various community organizations over the past couple of years I have seen that it has made a palpable difference.

I soon realized that there was a need for me to create a non-profit organization with the goal being to extend more services to those who cannot afford the fees, materials and tools to help organize their financial life and reach their goals. My hope is that through the creation of a non-profit, I will realize the ability to create an even more comprehensive experience for these individuals, so as to provide the most solid springboard possible as they move into financial independence.

Though I am just in the very beginning stages of the process of creating the non-profit organization, I am very excited that it will allow me to expand my reach and help many more people with the resources I will have access to with non-profit status. It has been very rewarding to work one-on-one with people in the community and helping them to see that with the right tools-no matter where you start out, you can end up wherever you want to be!

The bulk of my volunteer services over the last year and a half has been with the Bishop O'Donnell Transitional Housing Program. This program provides housing for single mothers and their children who are coming out of homeless shelters. While they are participants of the program, the goal in the end is to help them obtain self-sufficiency. Some of the many milestones the ladies face: to become employed, perhaps gain a new skill through schooling and to get affordable housing. My part in their journey is to offer them regular education and tools to manage their household budget, achieve their financial goals and to provide them with the knowledge base that will allow them to remain financially independent in the future-especially on a limited income.

I hold a monthly coupon swap for members of our Budget Queen community and the general public on the first Tuesday of every month at the South Regional Library in Lafayette, LA. Each month, the extra coupons from the swap are delivered to the residents of the Bishop O'Donnell Transitional Housing Program and they use these to save on their household needs during their stay in the program. The Lafayette Catholic Services Annual Report highlights The Budget Queen services that were offered in the past year and features one of the participants of the program choosing coupons for herself.

I provide each new resident of the Bishop O'Donnell Transitional Housing Center with an individualized budget consultation and follow-ups as needed. I also conduct a monthly group class for all the residents with a new focus for each class-example topics include proper and effective use of coupons, menu planning and supplying a household frugally. I volunteer these services to the residents and will continue to do so as I pursue non-profit status.

I have created this blog as an outlet to allow those who are interested in my work in the community to remain informed as to the progress we are making as a whole. I feel that by sharing success stories and sharing what we are accomplishing together on a monthly basis, it will provide awareness and hope to all touched by it."
